On 12 September 1848, the Old Swiss Confederacy became a federal state and the first democracy in Europe. To mark the 175th anniversary of modern-day Switzerland, the north façade of the Parliament Building is gaining a new artwork in the form of a giant mosaic.
Renée Levi and Marcel Richard Schmid have been partners – in their private and working lives – for many years, and as “Studio Renée Levi”, they develop “art in architecture” projects together and are designing the tympanum project for the Parliament Building.
This work is called “Tilo” and features 246 triangular ceramic tiles interacting with the light. Each element of this mosaic represents one of the 200 National Council and 46 Council of States seats.
To ensure that the façade of the Parliament Building continues to look good during the renovations, Richnerstutz has printed a mesh panel measuring an impressive 29 x 14 metres on behalf of Carpet and mounted this on the scaffolding.
